As efficiency and sustainability continue to drive decision-making in the label and package printing industry, converters are seeking new and innovative solutions that fit the bill. One such product, which has gained steam in recent years, is linerless labels.

In fact, there are numerous benefits associated with linerless labels. Even further down the supply chain, calculating for expenses, such as shipping costs, can be positively affected with this technology.

“Release liners and matrix account for more than half of the label waste created during label application,” states Angel Harvey, senior marketing manager, paper, Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials. “Direct Thermal Linerless labels don’t use a release liner. A silicone coating on the facestock means self-wound labels won’t stick to those underneath, eliminating the need for liner and matrix. Without liners, there is no liner waste, no liner disposal costs, and no safety risks to workers due to liner waste on the shop floor.”

While linerless labeling is not a new technology, the space has seen great advancements. For example, the most recent product launches feature state-of-the-art adhesives that enable greater application flexibility.

“Their advanced siliconizing technology makes them extremely easy to work with and allows for consistent performance,” explains Harvey. “Traditionally, there can be a lot of variation in print and performance with previous linerless products. The new Avery Dennison DT Linerless portfolio provides consistent performance across our emulsion adhesive offering. Our facestock is specifically designed to avoid variation in print and provide robust performance.”

Avery Dennison has delivered a range of solutions for quick serve restaurants, shipping labels and logistics, warehouse and transportation, weigh scale, click and pick, and more. The company unveiled the new direct thermal (DT) linerless label platform for variable information labels used in e-commerce, food delivery and pickup, and more, at the tail end of 2022.

“Leveraging our global adhesive capabilities, we’ve launched the portfolio on emulsion adhesives to support semi-permanent, removable and all-temp applications all while ensuring quality and consistent adhesive and silicone coating,” notes Harvey.

The new DT Linerless platform has generated a host of benefits, including fewer roll changes and more printer uptime. This is possible due to 32% thinner materials with up to 50% more labels per roll. Plus, no diecutting or matrix waste is produced, promoting lower supply chain costs.

The product was debuted for the industry at Labelexpo Americas 2022. “Feedback at the show was very positive,” says Harvey. “Converters are excited to see a new product with consistent performance and flexible service models on the market.”

In the future, Avery Dennison anticipates strong growth for this segment. “There is still a lot of future adoption in a variety of segments, including ecommerce, pharmaceutical and retail,” comments Harvey. “The possibilities are endless on where linerless technology can be leveraged in the future.”
